Feast your eyes on local delicacy. Food is the way to many of our hearts, and it doesn’t get much better than local cuisine in new surroundings that leaves your tastebuds craving for more with every bite. Imagine if you could feast your eyes on local delicacies every single day in paradise…

Luxury regions such as Quinta Do Lago, Vale Do Lobo, and Vilamoura pride themselves on wonderful cuisine founded on fresh ingredients from the deep blue sea. The influence and recognition of the Portuguese fishing industry and its fine tastes are second to none. Thus, it’s no surprise to learn that a popular dish such as Bacalhau (more commonly known as Cod) is top of the local menus.

Whether you choose to grill, boil, fry, or steam your Bacalhau; a tasteful combination would be to serve this with potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and/or olives. However, if Cod isn’t quite tickling your taste buds, other alternative seafood options include fresh sardines, seabass, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, crabs, shrimp, and prawns. Not to mention, that all expense spared and finer taste in life, perhaps the appeal of Lobster is something you could simply not turn down?

The Atlantic Sea also provides a great variety of other fish and shellfish in the form of clams, mussels, oysters, periwinkles, and scallops – it’s the ocean-color scene that never fails to deceive.

If meat is more your thing, Pork and Beef are the most common meats in Portugal. Caldo Verde, a traditional Portuguese soup made with potato, shredded collard greens, chunks of chouriço, and soft to mature cheeses is also quick to snap up in Michelin-starred restaurants and tapas bars to local food stores and market stalls.

For dessert and those with a sweet tooth, Portuguese cuisine offers a variety of delicious desserts such as the traditional Torta de Laranja (orange Swiss roll), Três Délicias (a trilogy of figs, carob, and almond), Pudim de Ovos com Caramelo (caramel pudding), or the delicious Farófias (a sweet made with milk, eggs, and cinnamon).

The Portuguese cuisine is a cultural experience and well worth trying, especially if you are looking to move out here for a permanent residence…
